Project of the Year Award
Beach Buddy Adventure
Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps

Introduction: Mary Ellen, President and CEO The Corps Network / Jeff Parker, Chair of the Corps Council / Joel Holtrop, Chair Board of Directors The Corps Network

Even though water covers 70 percent of the earth’s surface, many people don’t think about how their everyday activities affect our oceans and waterways.

The Corps Model lends itself to service learning and also informal STEM learning opportunities – and Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps was able to capitalize on both those strategies to partner with the California Coastal Commission, Thank you Ocean, and Cal Expo to create the Beach Buddy Adventure exhibit for the 2014 California State Fair.

The exhibit was comprised of multiple stations and different aspects of water pollution, and items supplied from the Corpsmembers ecological restoration work. The Corpsmembers were also presenters for the exhibit, and received training from the California Coastal Commission in the complexities of water pollution.

The Corps had a meaningful and measured impact on influencing attendees future behavior to reduce pollution – and provided Corpsmembers with a meaningful STEM learning opportunity.

Congratulations to Sacramento on their 2015 Project of the Year!
